Mission
Darul Hikmah is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to conduct and promote activities that address the contemporary spiritual, educational, and social needs of the Muslim community. Utilizing the skills, experience, and knowledge of young traditionally-trained scholars, Darul Hikmah focuses on the development and improvement of Islamic programs that best fit the needs of today’s Muslim community. Darul Hikmah’s programs are designed to enlighten a wide cross-section of Muslims in the basic foundations of their faith with the aim of empowering them so that they may live as upright citizens who fully understand their responsibilities as students of knowledge, seekers of spiritual purification, and disseminators of the faith.
PrinciplesDarul Hikmah’s principles reside in and are derived from the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) as exemplified by our pious predecessors and understood by the rightly-guided scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah wa ‘l-Jama‘ah. Darul Hikmah believes that the success of Muslims in the West is in understanding and implementing principles soundly derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah and that this holds true for any place or time period. We also believe that implementing these principles requires their sound interpretation in the Western context. At the same time, Darul Hikmah does not believe in forcing the faith to fit a modern context when it leads to compromising core Islamic beliefs and values. Darul Hikmah does not believe in interfering, denigrating, or belittling existing institutions that serve to accomplish similar goals. We believe in guiding Muslims to any healthy institution where they can grow and develop beyond Darul Hikmah’s own programs. Darul Hikmah understands that Muslims benefit most from the company of authentic scholars and that the masjid is the center of Islamic society and its activities. Darul Hikmah programs, therefore, are held in coordination with existing Islamic institutions and leading scholarly figures.
PhilosophyDarul Hikmah believes that all Islamic activities must be deeply rooted in principles derived directly from the tradition of the pious predecessors, namely the first three generations of Muslims and those who followed their way. The drive of Darul Hikmah’s activities is the pressing need to revive, implement, and unify the three primary functions of prophethood: education (ta‘lim), self-purification (tazkiyah), and propagation (tabligh). While there can be no doubt as to the individual importance of each of these functions of prophethood, it is too often that they are considered separate and independent entities. In reality, the simultaneous implementation of each of these efforts is absolutely fundamental to living a holistic, Islamic way of life. Darul Hikmah aims to achieve the noble objective of bridging the gap between today’s youth generation and their glorious Islamic tradition. By organizing programs that aim at familiarizing the masses with the concepts of ta‘lim, tazkiyah, and tabligh, it is hoped that not only will a strong appreciation for the Islamic legacy grow in their hearts but also a motivation to engage themselves in the noble efforts of prophethood.
